For the last six years, FDP Futsal's Vice President and Academy Director Farrell Pomponio has been developing her skill and expertise in the sport of pro Futsal. This exciting game is centered around technical prowess, agility, and quick decision making; it involves five players on each team taking to a large indoor court with plenty of speed. Farrell has certainly worked hard to become a highly accomplished player.
Recently, Farrell joined Team USA for the FIFUS World Cup in Argentina. This was the first time that America participated in this event and achieved a top-five ranking. After the completion of the event, Farrell was invited as a Select ID Player for the U.S. National Futsal Team Identification Camp during the week of March 23rd through 26th in Walnut Creek, California.
U.S. Soccer has kicked off its inaugural Futsal Women's National Team Identification Camp under head coach Marcia Tafarel, who has invited twelve identified players from across the East Coast to take part. Additionally, sixteen invited players will also be attending the event in hopes of garnering future consideration. To round out player identification and pool development efforts, an ID Camp in the East is planned for later this year featuring mostly select players from the West region. With international competition slated for 2024, U.S. Soccer is making strides to build a strong player base for the team's success.
Farrell expressed profound appreciation at her selection as one of the top players, noting "It is truly an honor to have achieved my dream and goal." She credited her accomplishments to those closest to her, including her husband and family who she said were "by my side since the hospital bed," in addition to her friends and coaches. Farrell concluded by saying she was "extremely thankful" for their unwavering support.
Farrell has extensive experience in both international and US Futsal competitions. She's been playing in the Women's Pro/Open Division for the past six years, representing the New York Ecuador Club. This past August, she participated in a prestigious event - Copa Mundo do Futsal Feminini Club World Cup, which was held in Brazil. In 2022, Farrell was chosen to be part of Team USA that played against Argentina's National Futsal team during the Northeast Regional Tournament. It goes without saying that Farrell is highly skilled and a formidable opponent on any court.
Farrell has obtained many prestigious experiences & titles while at the same time serving as the Vice President of the Futsal Development Program and Director of Coaching in the FDP Futsal Academy. Through her efforts, she has made significant strides in elevating programs and shaping future generations in the world of futsal.
Farrell's collegiate soccer and Team USA futsal achievements are remarkable, but her greatest accomplishment might be returning to the pitch after a difficult injury. While studying at GCU in 2013, Farrell was diagnosed with a serious, degenerative spinal condition leading to nerve damage and bone spurs on her vertebrae. Upon undergoing two surgeries, doctors believed Farrell could no longer play competitively. Determined not to let her doctor's predictions come true, Farrell battled back from what was described as an impossible recovery and showed up for her senior season in 2014. She played 20 games that year! That extraordinary comeback speaks volumes about Farrell's drive and determination in the face of daunting odds.
After several years of hard work following a life-altering injury, I can say with honesty that I'm proud of myself. It's been a challenging journey, but I refused to give up on my dream; the countless hours of rehabilitation and determination have paid off. As an extra bonus, I'm not done yet! It's an amazing feeling and one that I'll treasure forever.
Coach Farrell is held in the highest regard by all the players at the FDP Futsal Academy - boys, girls, everyone. We are all inspired by her dedication and enthusiasm for sport and life. Youth futsal players don't often get the chance to be trained by a pro athlete like Coach Farrell, who really understands what it takes to excel in this game. Thanks to her insight, our players can see what they need to do to reach their goals. Her commitment to excellence sets an example for our whole organization. We thank Coach Farrell for her invaluable contributions to the development of our programs.
