We are thrilled to announce that our very own Vice President and Director of Coaching, Farrell Pomponio, has been called up for the first U.S. Futsal National Team Camp. This prestigious camp, taking place from July 28 to August 2 at the Darlington School in Rome, Georgia, marks a significant milestone in Farrell’s career and a historic moment for women’s futsal in the United States.
After a year-and-a-half of rigorous talent identification camps, U.S. Women’s Futsal National Team head coach Marcia Tafarel has selected 18 elite players from across the country to participate in this inaugural training camp. The team will begin their journey towards qualifying for the inaugural FIFA Women’s Futsal World Cup, set to take place next year in the Philippines.
“This first full U.S. Women’s Futsal National Team camp is a milestone for women’s futsal in the United States,” said Tafarel. “Along with helping us take our first steps toward international competition, it is also a big step in promoting the sport and laying the groundwork for developing a competitive National Team to inspire future generations of female futsal players. We look forward to the work ahead with this group as we maintain our focus on qualifying for next year’s Futsal World Cup.”
Farrell Pomponio, hailing from Little Egg Harbor, New Jersey, has been a cornerstone of FDP Futsal Academy. Her leadership, dedication, and passion for the sport have significantly contributed to the growth and success of our academy. Her selection as one of the 18 players to represent the U.S. at this national camp is a testament to her hard work and exceptional talent.
The 18-player squad represents a diverse group of athletes from nine different states, showcasing the growing popularity and talent pool of women’s futsal in the U.S. Farrell will join other talented players, including goalkeeper Gabby Batmani from San Jose, California, who has earned 12 caps for the U.S. Beach Soccer Women’s National Team since 2022.
Farrell’s journey with the U.S. Women’s Futsal National Team is not just a personal achievement but also a proud moment for FDP Futsal Academy. Her call-up exemplifies the high standards of coaching and player development at our academy. We believe this opportunity will further enhance her skills and bring valuable experience back to our community.
As part of U.S. Soccer’s strategic pillar to develop winning teams, this camp is a crucial step in building a competitive National Team to inspire future generations of female futsal players. The Federation’s commitment to encouraging, enabling, and celebrating the game in all its forms was highlighted at the 2022 Annual General Meeting when plans to organize the Futsal WNT were announced.
In December 2022, FIFA approved the addition of a FIFA Futsal Women’s World Cup to its slate of international competitions, with the first edition set for 2025. This inclusion marks a significant step in the global recognition and development of women’s futsal, and we are excited to see how Farrell and her teammates will contribute to this historic event.
Please join us in congratulating Farrell Pomponio on this remarkable achievement. We are incredibly proud of her and look forward to supporting her as she represents FDP Futsal Academy and the United States on the international stage.
